Château Deyrem Valentin

3 Apr

So, what if this week I proposed a A.O.C MARGAUX wine? I invite you to discover the Château Deyrem Valentin, AOC Margaux, classified Cru Bourgeois. 🙂
Beautiful property of the 18th century (1730), it covers 15.5 hectares, 13 hectares of AOC Margaux and 2 ½ in Haut-Médoc AOC. The Chateau Deyrem Valentin is on the common Soussans and produces annually three wines: Château Deyrem Valentin (AOC Cru Bourgeois Margaux), Château Soussans (AOC Margaux) and Château Valentin (AOC Haut-Médoc).
This cute Bordeaux building has been in the Sorge family since 1928.

In 1999, after some wine making in Australia and in South America, Christelle Sorge (see photo), accompanied by her sister Sylvie take over from their parents. These two sisters, heirs of the paternal passion, put all the family experience and all their energies to perpetuate the policy of the vineyard: elegance, finesse, aromatic expressions.
A requirement in their work? Yes, honesty, respect for the land, the labor requirement in the vineyard and a requirement to master the skills of all stages, from the vine to bottling, are her watchwords.
Some features:
– Soil: deep gravel (graves profondes)
– Variety: 50% Merlot, 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 1% Petit Verdot, 1% Carmenere (which makes this wine special)
– Ageing: 12 to 15 months in barrel, 100% in barrel, 1 / 3 of new barrels (wood brings the side, toasty wine) 1 / 3 of a barrel of vintage, 1 / 3 of barrel two vintages
– Production of wine Château Valentin Deyrem: 70 000 bottles
– Tasting advice: decant the wine before serving to reveal all the aromas, the complexity of this wine.
The story of the week: Where does the name of the Chateau come from? The first owner of the Chateau, who was also the first mayor of the town after 1788.

His plan? a white wine vinification on a parcel undeveloped in the heart of the appellation …. but a white wine “out of the ordinary” (appointment is made in a few years)

Rated wine, I had the chance to discover the vintage 2009 … aromas of red fruit, cherry ripe, spicy notes and a toasted side characterize the sweet nectar.
For my part, I would advise you to associate it with a roasted red meat or veal …. Such as veal brochettes with red berries and green pepper with mushrooms.
Thanks to Christelle Sorge for his home.

Chateau La Tour de Bessan

19 Mar

Start this week in a prestigious appellation … Margaux … more specifically at the Chateau La Tour de Bessan (Margaux AOC)

Why the name? The remnants of an ancient medieval building (XIII century) built to protect the local Lord of the period: Jehan Columbus.

More recently it was in 1972 that this area of 32hectares was acquired by Lucien Lurton, buying the family Clauzel.

It was in 1992 that this vineyard is taken over by his daughter, Marie-Laure. A graduate of Oenology and who has 6 strong years of experience on the properties of her father, she has learnt to know perfectly each plot to get the best out of it each year.

Upon arrival Mrs. Lurton established ambitious development projects that affect both the vineyard itself (planted 32ha) and the technical infrastructure. Unleashing the architect Vincent Defos Rau for the rehabilitation of a building in the region formerly known as “the Blokos”.

What a great success of rehabilitation to combine modern architecture and technical requirements (installation of an ergonomic tub, a barrel cellar and a tasting room)!

“Transformation Magic”, “artistic creativity”, these are the words of Marie-Laure to define her job … Nice definition of the winemaker as an artist! I agree! 🙂
It works research by developing these “nectar”? The elegance, finesse, work on the fruit, the perfect balance … (Note to self: strong tasting!)

Some features:
– Soil: deep bass
– Grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon 60%, 30% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon
– Livestock: 12 to 16 months in barrels (depending on year) including 30% new, with the balance in a wine barrel to limited notes grilled / toasted
– Two wines: The first wine Chateau La Tour De Bessan, the 2nd wine: Le Page de la Tour De Bessan
– Practice a sustainable production method which respects the environment.
– Vineyard certified “Terra Vitis”. That is to say reconciling respect for the environment, innovation (regular evolution of the specifications), ecosystem biodiversity and the preservation of human health (including the winemaker)

For the anecdote and the proper plan of the week: For all lovers of the vine and wine lovers as neophytes more enlightened, Tour de Bessan offers “blending workshops.”

Well you could tell me “it’s good but what is it? “These workshops are aimed to help you discover / enjoy varieties individually in order to reveal the specifics. But that’s not all!

The time of a morning you are put in the shoes of an oenologist by assembling the grapes as YOU want in order to create your own bottle …. Personally I would see a “Chateau Jonathan”
Well, let’s one of my favorite parts: THE TASTING (what a sweet sacrifice! )

Château La Tour de Bessan 2009: a pretty purple colour inviting you to plunge with delight into this wine, notes of blackberry, violet, incredibly silky tannins, finishing with spicy notes. Also a nice roundness in the mouth …. A wine that will work well with, say, a duck breast Rossini accompanied by a fried mushroom 😉

The Château de la Tour Page Bessan, vintage 2009: a pleasant nose with aromas of wood, red fruit (cherry, strawberry …), silky tannins on the palate ending with a freshness that will delight your palate  nectar Perfect to accompany a wok-fried lamb and green beans with hazelnuts or simply with a  cheese board.

Thanks to Marie-Laure Lurton for the warm welcome.
